The Colts travelled to Weston Super Mare RFC for the Somerset Cup Final. This was set to be a close tussle even though Chew had inflicted three wins on Hornets during the season to date. Chew were without some key players, lost to injury, and Hornets were clearly keen to end on a winning note. The fair conditions were great for flowing rugby and Hornets started with the benefit of a brisk helping cross wind.

During the early exchanges Hornets monopolised territory and had most of the ball albeit Chew's defence proved strong and tough to penetrate, this having been a characteristic of the season as a whole. Zak Radforth's boot relieved the pressure on a number of occasions and Zak’s kicking from hand was near faultless throughout the match. In the 14th minute, Chew made one of their rare early incursions into Hornet's territory. Hornets were found offside and Zak converted the resulting penalty. First blood to Chew.

This settled Chew and they grew in confidence. In the 16th minute, Chris Martin adeptly collected a loose Hornets' pass on the half way line and fed Patrick Wring. Patrick got up a real head of steam and broke to the line to score. Zak added the extras. Then on 23 minutes, Chew worked the ball from a breakdown on the right eventually to Ralf Warner who galloped through on the left wing put a grubber kick down and gathered it up to score.

Chew looked be taking charge at this point and the penalty count was racking up against Hornets while Chew's discipline remained good. However, shortly before the break, Chew got over confident looking to run a ball 10 metres out from their line rather than clearing to safety. A dropped pass didn't go to hand and Hornets gathered up to run through and get their first points on the board. With the last play before half time, the position further improved for Hornets with a converted try and what looked like a comfortable position for Chew had become very tight with the scores at 15 v 12.

The second half saw Hornets really grow into the game as they became particularly menacing at moving the ball wide where Chew's defence proved far less adept at containing them as they fell off a number of tackles. As a result they scored two tries the first of which involved a chipped ball which bounced awkwardly in front of Ralf Warner and Hornets ran onto it to score. This brought the scores to 15 v 24 and the fluency had gone out of Chew's play albeit they retained strength in some areas such as the scrum and were not giving away penalties.

Max Culverhouse brought Chew back in touch with a score in the corner in the 58th minute. However, less than 10 minutes from time there was what might have been a pivotal moment taking the game way from Chew. Hornets, with another well worked break, looked sure to score with a two on one and Mal Thompson the last man standing. Mal somehow managed to pull off a tap tackle which brought Hornets' man down who spilled the ball as he hit the 'deck'.

The scene was set for a grandstand finish with Chew gathering themselves and playing deeper in Hornets' territory. From a short line out, Chew set up a drive, the ball was released but lost from a popped pass. With the clock nearly in the red, Chew's maul was penalised and the position looked increasingly concerning. Hornet's penalty clearance was weak but they still had the throw in. At the line out, Conor McNama made a game changing intervention with a superb finger tip steal. The ball was worked to Arthur Heard who made a superb run and fed Ralf Warner who dived over. As they say, "you couldn't write it!" Chew had stolen the match with the last play and were absolutely elated.

Adding the Somerset Cup to the U18 Somerset League trophy was an excellent achievement which apparently has not been done before and this capped off a memorable season. Commiserations to Hornets who came so close to the win.
