For the penultimate game of the season, Chew Colts welcomed Bridgwater to play the Somerset U18 League Final and the game was set for open rugby in sunny conditions with the ground very firm under foot.

In the semi final the previous weekend, Chew toiled under the weight of a lot of errors. However, from the first whistle they looked much sharper in the Final, registering a try in the 3rd minute. Chew established a great attacking position from a line out drive and worked the ball out to Arthur Heard who burst through 3 tackles to cross the line. He had a lot to do to make the score and this was the beginning of a man of the match performance from Arthur. Zak Radforth added the extras to get Chew off to a strong start.

Chew's position improved in the 15th minute with Arthur again scoring the points. The score was, however, fundamentally about Freddie Patch's 30 metre run whereby, from the full back position, he collected a downfield kick from Bridgwater showed real pace to break through a number of defenders and feed Fraser Barker. Fraser, who had been counselled the previous week not to use the boot, proved all his doubters wrong, showing finely tuned "George Fordesque" kicking skills to put a grubber through which Arthur gathered and scored. Zak Radforth again added the extras.

In the 28th minute, Chew stretched their lead with a nicely worked try. From a ruck on the left wing just inside Bridgwater's 22, Chew won another phase of ruck ball and then fed the ball to Chris Martin's who found Ralf Warner who, in turn, worked a lovely interchange with Mal Thompson to cross the line. This was a sweet moment for Ralf, who looked sharp immediately from his introduction, given this was his return following a shoulder injury which had kept him out for the all of the season.

Chew looked like they might take a 19 v 0 lead into the break, but Bridgwater scored a try which was the least they deserved having had a fair share of the match.

Chew started the 2nd half well. Their scrum proved a solid platform all match and 5 metres from Bridgwater's line Jack Johnson fed Arthur Heard who completed his hatrick with a nice dummy and a short run to the line. Chew then added another in the 60th minute from a line out catch a drive. Patrick Wring, who deservedly was forward of the match, soared above the crowd, safely gathering the line out throw and Chew's forwards formed a powerful driving maul with Joe Muscat touching down. It was text book.

While Bridgwater continued to compete strongly, Chew were finding some rhythm. The set piece again gave them the platform with a solid scrum on the right of Bridgwater's 22. Jack Johnson moved the ball to Zak Radforth who made a pinpoint long pass to Chris Martin. A decoy run by Mal Thompson had drawn the eye some of Bridgwater's defence and Chris delivered a flat pass to Ewen Tarrant who beat three covering tacklers from Bridgwater's 22 to score.

Chew were elated to lift the cup, but all credit to Bridgwater Colts who did themselves and their club proud and made it a great game.
