Chew Valley 3rds 26 - Nailsea & Backwell 3rds 05

Eloise Brown

Chew Valley 3’s turned up at Lobbington’s knowing that 3 bonus point wins from their last 3 fixtures could potentially see them crowned as league champions.

Like a thoroughbred racehorse timing it’s run in The Derby to perfection, the mighty Chew Valley 3’s turned up at Lobbington’s knowing that 3 bonus point wins from their last 3 fixtures could potentially see them crowned as league champions.

The mighty 3’s stuck with their usual preparation in terms of training, by not training.

Its not that the boys aren’t committed, but seriously, do you really think the largest forward pack in Christendom are going to miss The Great British Bake Off on a Tuesday, or Celebrity MasterChef on a Thursday night?!!!

Once in the changing rooms however, it was clear that all was not well.

Due to a small child not sleeping, the skipper Matt “40 years of senior rugby” Flannigan was still pushing a pushchair around a rainy Compton Martin, but worse, much worse, Pete “the nutritionist” Thorne, had arrived on time!

Although an un-elected role, the mighty 3’s nutritionist is responsible for the following crucial information;

1. How much the troops are allowed to drink on a Friday night.
2. What time the troops must finish drinking by on a Friday night.

Unfortunately, giddy with excitement at playing against his 2 boyhood clubs, Nailsea & Backwell, Pete forgot to dispense the above mentioned information!

In addition, due to the absence of manager Pembs, Pete was responsible for bringing the halftime sweets.

Unfortunately, due to 2 sets of temporary traffic lights on his journey to the club, Pete somehow managed to inhale both packets of Harribo he’d purchased.

I digress.

Once on the pitch for their warm up, the mighty3’s made light of conditions that would have led to the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette dusting off their “Phew what a scorcher” headline - gale force wind and hailstones!!

And so to the game…

A truly dominant display from the mighty 3’s forward pack saw some of the most ferocious scrummaging ever seen by the 400 strong crowd who had grown tired of the un-necessarily fast paced game on the first team pitch.

At one point, an eyewitness account from Chew Valley’s own media mogul Eloise, described in detail how a Chew forward, who for legal reasons cannot be named, deliberately knocked the ball on so that the most fearsome pack in the Valley could have another scrum. For the record, Billy Baker said it wasn’t on purpose and he had actually tried to catch it!

Lots of things rugby related proceeded to happen, Chew ran out winners by 26-5, with a conversion by Matt Curtis, yes, you read that right, and a bonus point win secured,

Two games to go….

Two bonus point wins needed for the title….

Anticipation is at fever pitch as the dream lives on.

One very proud captain, thanks his troops for their service. ❤

C’mon you CHEW!!!!
