How wonderful to see a dry Spring day finally appear, and whilst the wind was strong we all enjoyed the wonders of seeing a glimpse of the sun on Chew Valley Cats last league game of the season. The Cats and their hosts were evenly matched for the first quarter of the game and if you were a betting person it would have been a hard one to call. But with dominant ball carriers in their armoury, it was only a matter of time before the weapons were deployed. The first try of the game came from the hosts, but not long after The cats crossed the whitewash after a wonderful period of play culminating in a super offload from Holly Washington to Hannah for the try. 7-7. It was at this point that the weapons came out firing, in particular Brontë Lynch, Ally Stevens and Poppy Elliman showing strength in close contact. This was also evident in the, yet again, formidable scrummaging from The Cats. Spectators were given a fabulous display of open play, offloading and support play from Chew with Brontë Lynch making a break from half way and off loading to the ever present Anna Dyson, putting her in for the try. 7-12. And this was the pattern of play that repeated throughout, it was Taylor Woodman’s turn to dazzle after a truly splendid team demonstration of off loading bringing the half time score to 7-19.
The second half saw Bridgwater come back fighting with their no 10 orchestrating matters. Penalties were starting to add up and the hosts took the opportunity to tap quickly and go under the posts to score 12-19. It wasn’t long, however, until the next weapon was deployed and Brontë Lynch crashed over for her first of a brace of tries 12-26. Not to sit back and let Chew dominate, Bridgwater fought back and managed to find their way to the line again to keep The Cats within reach 19-26. But it was evident throughout the second half that The Cats were going to win, it was just a case of by how much. The quick taps were working for both sides today and this time it was Brontë Lynch on the receiving end of a tap that took her over for her second. 19-33. Not long after, having had another wonderful passage of interplay, second row and forward of the match Alice Budgen, went over for her first try in the green and white shirt. 19-38. The last flurry of activity came from yet more beautiful ‘sexy’ rugby with Ani Heredi scoring after a breakthrough at halfway by Ally Stevens and a fabulous run of play interlinking forwards and backs. Final score 19-45. A special mention to no 10 and back of the match Charlotte Hynam for orchestrating a well organised team performance and for adding 5 conversions to the scoreboard.
